Can I make some driftwood from oak wood scraps?
I want to put some wood in my tank for my Loaches to scrape their teeth on. They have been eating the paint off the tank heater. The wood they have for sale in the pet store is quite expensive and some of it seems like wood but isn’t.
be carefule, you can try to get your own wood from outside but you have to treat it right before you put it in your tank, or else things can get bad (kill your fish from diease and other external effects)
to cure your wood, find some drift wood in natural settings, a beach or some place realativly safe/clean.
spend about 1-2 weeks cleaning your wood.
first start off with scrubing the wood, use warm soapy water and a srcub pad. let it soak in water after for about a day.
next get a pot and boil water, add the wood and for about 20-30 mins boil the wood making sure all parts are seeing hot water action.
next let your wood soak in a bleach – water solution for about 2 days. then after that for 2 days do a rinse dry application. rinse the wood in water let dry and repeat.
you should be good. give it time to clean your wood, you might have to repeat the process somewhat if your wood is tainiting the wate in your fish tank when added. There are alot of parasites, and other nasty things on the wood not good for your fish.
