general question about converting natural gas to propane?
i recently bought a wall mount ventless space heater, not realizing it was made for use with NATURAL GAS. the heater only cost me $45 on craigslist. (vanguard 18,000 btu) Is there a fairly cheap or easy way to convert this on my own without having to spend $50 on a conversion kit? or should i just look into buying a new heater altogether? (one that uses propane)
No you cannot “Magiver” the thing! You must get the model and serial number off of the rating plate and contact the manufacturer either directly or through a dealer. They will tell you if the appliance is convertable or not. Not all heaters are convertable. If it is, they will provide you with the necessary pieces to convert the unit. Some are quite easy and require very little, and others can mean replacing the gas valve, burner, orifices and a herd of other bits and pieces. Usually it is fairly inexpensive to do so. With this conversion kit in hand, any qualified technician can easily convert the heater and set it up for you. This isn’t a DIY job.
The most important thing to this process is that you get a new rating plate that states the appliance is certified to use that fuel! If you do not have that attached, and the appliance is the cause of a fire, two things will happen. The manufacturer will take no responsibility whatsover, and your home insurance will not cover you for damage or liability if anyone is hurt…I’ve seen this happen several times! Don’t take short cuts here…it’s not worth it!
