Aquascaping–What kind of gravel and CO2 system should I pick?
Hello everyone,
I am in the beginning stages of setting up a 75 gallon tank. So far I’ve got Ecco Eheim filter with Hydor inline heater.
Fish-wise there will be only one male betta, but I want to turn the tank into an aquascaping project.
Is there any specific type of gravel I should be looking for?
Also, what kind of CO2 system could you recommend?
And last question–are there plants that don’t like warmer water (since bettas do)?

Most plants such as Vallisneria, Cabomba, Java fern, Java moss, Anubias, Glossostigma etc will be fine in tropical conditions. I would recommend http://www.tropica.com for reference.
As for CO2 injection this largely depends on the size of your tank. On a small tank you could actually use a liquid carbon additive such as Easylife easycarbo or Seachem flourish. However on a large tank this would be quite expensive so a pressurised CO2 system would be the cheapest and most efficient option. There are quite a few CO2 kits on the fishkeeping market however quite a few aquascapers are putting together their own systems using CO2 fire extinguishers.
The substrate is quite important in a planted aquaria, most plants obtain nutrients from the substrate so choose one which contains a lot of trace elements and macronutrients. Some of the best substrates include the Tropica aquacare substrate, Caribsea eco-complete, the ADA amazonia and malaya substrates and Seachem flourite. All of these substrates except the Seachem flourite should be covered with at least 5cm/2″ of fine sand or gravel. Avoid coarse substrates as this can prohibit penetration of plant roots into the substrate.
Finally a word of warning when using pressurised CO2 systems. If you have young children or pets, make sure that the CO2 cylinder is kept out of reach and fasten it to a wall or to the inside of the aquarium cabinet. CO2 is dangerous and a leaking cyclinder will act like a rocket engine due to the pressurized nature of the gas.
